Not a single curse was uttered. The only tool requirement was a phillips head screw driver. The allen wrenches were provided. Only had to insert the stem, attach the handle bars, pedals, and seat post. It does require some tweaking to get all the gears crisp - but out of the box the middle gears all worked great and good enough on the edges. If you didn't want to mess with the gears, it would be good to use as is. The bike is light weight but solidly built. My 9 year old loves it! I compared this to a "mountain bike" with suspension and wider tires. This bike is much more nimble and "fast" according to my son. The added features on equivalent mountain bikes for kids in this price range only add to the weight and do little to make a smoother or more fun riding experience for a kid. 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful  was hoping for a slightly better experience, Verified Purchase This review is from: Diamondback Insight 24" Kid's Bike (Sports) So I ordered this bike for my son and I am pretty handy with things and have some experience with bikes but am no bike shop expert. This past weekend I took to assembling it as I expected the process to take a little while to figure out all the little details and adjust the brakes, gears, etc. It did not disappoint. What did disappoint is Diamondback and their apparent terrible quality control. While these may be a hair better than bikes you buy at big-box stores, I finally figured out these are no bike-shop bikes. First both wheels when assembled were wobbly and obviously out of true. Back one rubbed on the brakes here and there but not terrible, brakes could still be adjusted to be effective. While rubbing can and will wear the brakes prematurely and doesn’t make for the most effective pedaling, it is manageable for a kids bike. He would pedal as fast as he could but it would wear him out after an hour or so. This is a very good bike for the money and just right for a 9-10 year old looking to move up. The bike is light at around 25 pounds and decently made. About the only thing you will need to buy is a kick stand. One knock on the bike is that there really isn't room for a water bottle. There are bosses on the underside of the downtube for you to put a water bottle holder but that puts it just behind the front wheel.Putting the bike together wasn't too bad but I wouldn't depend solely on the instructions. Assembly mainly consisted of installing the handlebars, putting the seat in and installing the front wheel.
